More library customers in Gloucestershire will be given access to services outside of libraries’ core opening hours under plans to introduce new technology.

The technology, called Open Access, is being introduced to the libraries at Churchdown, Fairford, Prestbury, Quedgeley, and Tetbury in the coming year, enabling registered customers to use library services outside of ordinary staffed hours. It is already used at Bishops Cleeve and Oakley libraries so this would see the service extended to cover more areas.

It gives customers the opportunity to browse books, borrow and return items using the self-serve kiosks, use study areas and use public computers and print from them during these quieter times, with access to free public WiFi.

During Open Access hours, the library would be open but no staff would be present. To be able to access the library during these times, customers would need to register in person with a member of staff using their library membership and complete a short induction. Library membership can be made online or at the library. You can join online at: https://gloucestershire.spydus.co.uk/cgi-bin/spydus.exe/MSGTRN/WPAC/JOIN

They would be given a unique pin to gain access into the building during Open Access hours. Hours are outside normal opening times, including before the library opens and after it closes, and would differ for each library. Please check the website before visiting as these hours can change from time to time. This happens occasionally for reasons including one-off events or maintenance.

Residents are being asked to take part in a survey to help identify priorities for their local library, including how you would wish to use your library outside of staffed hours.

The surveys will be closing on 31 January 2025. To access the surveys online to take part, please click on one of the links below:

It’s great that more library customers will be given access to services when libraries are closed using this new technology. It means that customers will not be restricted to opening times to use the many services our libraries offer.

Cllr Dave Norman, cabinet member for libraries
I would encourage people to take part in the survey so you can let us know your views on these proposals, so we can continue to develop a service that meets local needs most effectively.
